:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from C. R. Gibbons -- Active engagement is key : This book is broken up into dialogues, and one of the reasons I love this book is its thoughtful pre- and post-dialogue reflections. If you are committed to supporting students of color in your math department, this is a practical and worthy book to work through. The authors have created an incredible resource for the community, and I can't recommend it highly enough! ( Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Christine von Renesse -- Inspiring Book! : The book is "easy" to read since you are really listening to an authentic conversation between the authors. It is also incredibly engaging, there are writing prompts before and after each dialog, and the reader is being addressed personally in the text. It is almost as if you are "there." I have read/heard other work on white privilege and racism before - so there weren't necessarily new big ideas for me BUT there were many small ideas about what I (a white mathematician) could do and how. It was a great motivation and inspiration to do better. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Haley Yaple -- Helping me finally take action! : Excellent book! I’m at the stage where I recognize systemic racism and have learned about some of the struggles faced by students of color (and faculty! and staff!) in math, but I wasn’t sure what to do about it. Reading this helped me take some action! It’s structured in a really useful way, with thought-provoking “workbook” questions before and after each chapter. I’ve now lent out my copy to a colleague and will recommend it to my network of peers. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from PB -- A very different book : It may be a bit tough to read, but I found this book eye opening. It is making me think differently about the issue of underrepresentation in STEM, and what to do about it. A must read for anyone interested in improving diversity!
